Past Perfect Tense
What is Past Perfect Tense?
Past Perfect shows that one action happened before another action in the past. It describes the earlier of two past actions. We use had + past participle.
Structure: Had + Past Participle

All subjects + had + past participle

  • I had finished work before she arrived.
  • She had left when I got there.
  • We had eaten before they came.
  • They had studied all night before the exam.

Time sequence examples:

  • First: He had lived in Paris for 5 years.
  • Then: He moved to London.
  • First: The movie had started.
  • Then: We arrived at the cinema.
Negative Forms
We add not after had. Contraction: hadn't.

All subjects + hadn't + past participle

  • I hadn't finished when she called.
  • She had not seen the movie before.
  • We hadn't met before that day.
  • They hadn't arrived yet when it started.
Question Forms
We put had before the subject.

Had + subject + past participle?

  • Had you finished before I arrived?
  • Had she left when you got there?
  • Had they eaten before the party?
  • Had he studied English before?

Question words + had + subject + past participle?

  • Where had you been before this?
  • What had she done before that?
  • How long had they lived there?
  • Why had he left early?

When to Use Past Perfect
1. Sequence of past events (before/after):
I had finished work before she arrived.
After we had eaten, we went for a walk.
2. Earlier action in past narrative (when/by the time):
When I got to the station, the train had left.
By the time we arrived, the movie had started.
3. Past experience before another past time:
She knew Paris well because she had lived there.
He was tired because he had worked all night.
4. Reported speech for earlier actions:
She said she had seen the movie.
They told me they had finished the project.
Time Expressions with Past Perfect

Sequence markers:

  • before - I had left before she arrived.
  • after - After we had eaten, we watched TV.
  • by the time - By the time I got there, they had gone.
  • when - When I called, she had already left.

Duration before past moment:

  • for - She had lived there for 10 years before moving.
  • since - He had worked there since 2010 when I met him.
  • all day/week/year - They had worked all day before the break.

Completion markers:

  • already - She had already left when I arrived.
  • just - The train had just departed.
  • never - I had never seen such a beautiful place.
  • ever - Had you ever been there before?
Past Perfect vs Other Past Tenses
Past Simple (single past action):
I finished work at 5 PM. (one action)
Past Perfect (earlier of two past actions):
I had finished work before she arrived. (sequence)
Timeline example:
First: He had studied English for 2 years.
Then: He moved to America.
Common Mistakes to Avoid

Wrong: "I had went there before."
Why wrong: Wrong past participle form

Correct: "I had gone there before."
❌
Wrong: "She had finish her work."
Why wrong: Missing past participle ending

Correct: "She had finished her work."
❌
Wrong: "I finished work before she had arrived."
Why wrong: Later action shouldn't be past perfect

Correct: "I had finished work before she arrived." (Earlier action = past perfect)

Wrong: "I have had seen that movie."
Why wrong: Mixing present perfect and past perfect
✅
Correct: "I had seen that movie." (Past Perfect)
